Animation and its Styles
The first ever animated feature was released sometime in between 1905 -1907 by an Anglo-American gentleman, James Stuart Blackton.
Since then, animation has traversed a remarkable journey giving life to audio-visual aesthetics and making magic in the global entertainment industry.

From mere hand-drawn shapes, objects and characters that were given the illusion of movement through laborious cel animation, to the jaw-dropping effects of CGI technology, animation now comes in many styles. Most of which are used by more and more marketers to promote their brand.
Let us take you through the main styles of animation...
2D Animation
The art and science of getting drawings (whether in black and white, or in colour) to come to life, so that an illusion of movement is created, is what a two-dimensional (or 2D) animation is.

Before the advent of computers, 2D animation was used to create cartoons which have and still are entertaining and educating audiences of all ages.
2D animations were created using cel acetates to replicate hand-drawn characters so that different actions could be etched into them without having to draw the characters repeatedly. The sequences of cel drawings were then filmed to bring about the illusion that the hand-drawn characters were ‘moving’.

3D Animation
Since we entered the Digital Era, cartoons are now created with the help of Computer Generated Imagery (CGI) which makes the production process a lot easier for animators, as they do not have to use cel acetates to replicate characters, which saves a lot of time and energy for animators to spend on shooting and post –production (i.e. editing, mixing, finalizing the animation).

Aside from the initial brainstorming and researching ideas, during the pre-production stage, most of the work is done using computers (preferably Macs) and state-of-the-art software, e.g. Maya and AfterEffects.
Stop Motion Animation
Imagine an object of any kind, size and shape. Imagine it being placed in various positions and photographed in each of these positions. Imagine all these photographs being played in a sequence to you.
What do you see?
Yes! The object appears to be moving.
This is what stop motion animation is and has been used in animated feature films made by major companies, such as Aardman Animations, Warner Bros, 20th Century Fox, etc.

Motion Graphics
When a series of graphics are made to have movement, the process of bringing this about is what is referred to as motion graphics.
Motion graphics are normally displayed through electronic media – e.g. computers, television screens, cinema screens, smartphones, tablets, etc.
A typical example of a motion graphic is the sequence of words and images that whoosh in to tell you who the production company and the distributors are of the movie you are about to see.

Whiteboard Animation
Think of teachers using a whiteboard to explain concepts, theories and models and professionals using one to brainstorm during office meetings.
The principle in making whiteboard animations has evolved out of these purposes. You see, a whiteboard animation is where viewers get to see how the artist physically writes and draws the animation to life.

Doodle videos and video scribing are both similar to whiteboard animation.
